Julie Sassoon, whose playing has frequently been compared with Keith Jarrett's legendary Cologne concert, moves between composition and improvisation: a shimmering, ethereal music, created from finely wrought, complex sound clusters of consistently imaginative expression. It is at once focussed yet open, conveying both meditative stillness and agitated restlessness. Fragile tenderness is juxtaposed with powerful expressiveness. In her quartet, which transcends the stylistic boundaries of both jazz and minimalism, Julie Sassoon has found three musicians who sensitively absorb, develop, expand and contrast these qualities. The composition-based musical concept also opens up new space for dialogue and solos by the individual musicians who, well-versed and experienced in playing various genres, are given their creative freedom. In performance, the musicians engage in an intense, thoughtful interplay that complement Julie Sassoon's compositions as starting points, filling them out and taking them in new directions, while interweaving various individual influences into new musical textures.
