Fay, Kalyn
Good Company
After 3 years of taking time to hone her writing skills with national and international songwriters (Leah Flanagan, Kaia
Kater, Nive Nielson, Cris Derkson, etc) and performing on a variety of national platforms, Kalyn Fay's thoughtful
sophomore album, Good Company, is her second release on Oklahoma-based label, Horton Records. A sound said to be,
"quintessentially Oklahoma," this Cherokee singer-songwriter returns in this record to explore her unique relationship
to her home-state; the values, the people, the land, and the inevitable distance one has to create. In the same vein as
her debut record, Bible Belt (2016) , she is not one to shy away from honesty. Offering up a heartfelt and, at times,
frank collection of experiences in song, Fay has created a polished and genuine second album. Driven by a folk, country,
and indie rock sensibility, Good Company contains the accessibility of modern elements, though intertwined with vintage
sounds, similar to those of Beachwood Sparks and Cat Power. It ebbs and flows seamlessly throughout the album, a mixture
of strong, but soft vocals and hard-hitting guitar solos. Though not explicitly mentioned throughout the album, one can
feel her indigeneity steering the foundation, both musically and lyrically.
